The CSET — English test has four subtests. The first subtest has 40 multiple-choice questions dealing with literature and textual analysis, and 10 multiple-choice questions dealing with composition and rhetoric. The second subtest has 50 multiple-choice questions that deal with language, linguistics, and literacy. The third subtest deals with composition, rhetoric, literature and textual analysis. This subtest has no multiple-choice questions; rather, it has 2 constructed- response questions, 1 based on literary texts, and 1 on nonliterary responses. The fourth subtest covers communications via speech, media, and creative performance. This subtest also has no multiple-choice questions, and instead has 4 constructed-answer questions.
The first CSET — English subtest is broken into sections that are broken down still further into subsections. The first section covers literature and textual analysis. The first subsection covers literary analysis of literary traditions in the United States, Britain, world literature, and mythology. It also traces the major literary movements through history. The second subsection covers literary elements that include identification of the characteristics of various genres, and the elements of literature. The third subsection covers literary criticism; and the final subsection covers analysis of non-literary texts. The second section covers composition and rhetoric. This section has subsections including written composing process, rhetorical features of literary and non-literary texts, rhetorical effects of grammatical elements, conventions of language, and research strategies.
The second CSET — English subtest covers language, linguistics, and literacy. This is broken down into sections covering human language structures, acquisition and development of literacy, literacy studies, and grammatical structures of the English language.
The third CSET — English subtest covers language, linguistics, and literacy. This is broken down into sections covering human language structures, acquisition and development of literacy, literacy studies, and grammatical structures of the English language.
The fourth CSET — English subtest covers speech, media, and creative performance. The sections tested in this category are oral communication processes that require the candidate to deliver an oral performance, as well as demonstrate an ability to critique the oral performances of others; media analysis and journalistic applications; dramatic performance both from the perspective of acting and the perspective of directing; and creative writing in several genres.
