CSET — Health Science

The CSET — Health Science test has three subtests. The first subtest has 10 multiple-choice questions, and 1 extended-answer question dealing with the foundations of health education; 10 multiple-choice questions dealing with human growth and development; and 20 multiple-choice questions and 1 short-answer question dealing with chronic and communicable diseases. The second subtest has 15 multiple-choice questions and 1 short-answer question dealing with nutrition and fitness; 10 multiple-choice questions dealing with mental and emotional health; and 15 multiple-choice questions and 1 extended constructed- response question dealing with alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs. The third subtest has 15 multiple-choice questions and 1 short-answer question dealing with family life and interpersonal relationships; 15 multiple-choice questions dealing with consumer and community health; and 15 multiple-choice questions dealing with environmental health.

On the first CSET — Health Science subtest the candidate must demonstrate knowledge of professional foundations and familiarity with Healthy People 2010. Additional topics include knowledge of human anatomy, physiology, the ability to identify trends in health education, and knowledge of laws concerning the balance between privacy and school reporting obligations. The second portion of the first subtest requires knowledge of growth, development, and emotional and social development. The third part of the first subtest requires the candidate to demonstrate knowledge of risk factors and symptoms of common communicable diseases.

The second subtest covers nutrition, including information on requirements for vitamins, fats, water, and proteins. The candidate must demonstrate an understanding of how nutritional requirements change based on age, activity level, and health. The candidate must understand physical fitness and how fitness can be assessed and improved through a fitness plan. The second part of the subtest examines the candidate's knowledge of mental and emotional health including stress, depression, and suicide. The third part of the subtest tests the candidate's knowledge of drug effects on the human body, drug use, abuse and addiction, and strategies for preventing substance abuse.

The first part of the third CSET subtest deals with family, interpersonal relationships, human sexuality and reproductive health. The second part tests the candidate's knowledge of consumer and community health. The candidate should be able to explain the social implications of bullying, abuse, and hate crimes. The candidate should also show an ability to develop an emergency preparedness plan and discuss why a plan is important. The final portion discusses environmental health, biohazards, and prevention of pollution.
