The CSET — Industrial and Technology Education test is broken into two subtests. The first subtest has 45 multiple-choice questions, 2 short-answer questions, and 1 extended-response question dealing with the nature of technology. The second subtest has 25 multiple-choice questions, and 1 short- answer question dealing with power and energy; 25 multiple-choice questions, and 1 short-answer question dealing with information and communication; and 25 multiple-choice questions, and 1 short-answer question dealing with project and product development.
The first CSET — Industrial and Technology Education subtest covers innovation and design, careers and employability skills, safety and the environment, society and globalization, independent and integrated system models, and integration with other academic disciplines. The innovation and design section requires the candidate to understand engineering design, the uses of technology to solve problems and to meet the needs of new fields, and understanding what factors influence design form and function. The safety and the environment section tests on knowledge of safety regulations and procedures, as well as environmental issues.
The second CSET — Industrial and Technology Education subtest covers the processes of power generation, including solar, geothermal, and nuclear power systems and how they convert energy from one form into another. This section also tests on knowledge of the infrastructure and architecture associated with different systems. The next portion of the second subtest covers renewable resources and their uses. The information and communication section covers design processes, telecommunications systems, computer design, and the materials that go into making and using these systems. The candidate must also demonstrate knowledge of physical and electronic security issues. The final major section of the second subtest covers project and product development. Areas tested include engineering principles, manufacturing and construction processes, resources, and quality assurance. This final area deals with both product testing and consumer satisfaction and feedback.
