The CSET — Preliminary Educational Technology exam is broken down into two subtests. The first subtest has 40 multiple-choice questions on basic operations, concepts, and issues of computer-based technology; and 30 multiple-choice questions and 2 short-answer questions dealing with productivity applications of computer-based technology. The second subtest has 40 multiple-choice questions, 2 short-answer questions, and 1 extended constructed-response question dealing with teaching and learning applications of computer-based technology.
The first CSET — Preliminary Educational Technology subtest is broken down into two sections. The first section covers operations, concepts, and issues of computer-based technology. This section includes subsections on basic principles of computer hardware and software operation and care, basic troubleshooting for computers and related peripheral devices, acceptable use policies and legal and ethical issues, and privacy, security, and safety issues. The second section deals with productivity applications of computer-based technology. The subsections are: Managing records and information, communicating through multiple forms of media, communicating using computer-based collaborative tools, and using electronic research tools and applying information literacy skills.
The second CSET — Preliminary Educational Technology subtest covers teaching and learning applications of computer-based technology. The candidate must demonstrate an ability to use current best practices and research findings on the effective use of technology to improve teaching and learning. The candidate must also demonstrate understanding of the criteria for evaluating and selecting software and electronic learning media. This requires the candidate to understand what software best suits an individual student's needs and development.
